Electric Pickups in the UK: When Will We See the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T?

by Mark Muschamp 01 May 2025

🚙 Introduction

The electric pickup market is booming in the US — but here in the UK, many enthusiasts are still asking:
When will we see the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T on British roads?

Both of these high-tech trucks have captured global attention for their design, power, and futuristic features. But for UK drivers — especially those in rural, fleet, or off-road environments — the wait for these electric pickups is still ongoing. Let’s look at what we know so far, what’s holding things back, and what alternatives might be coming sooner.

🚀 Tesla Cybertruck: Built for Mars, But Is It Ready for the UK?

After years of hype and delays, the Tesla Cybertruck officially launched in the US in late 2023. Featuring an angular stainless-steel body and bulletproof claims, it’s been divisive but undeniably groundbreaking.

🧾 Key Specs (US Model):

  • Range: 250 to 340+ miles, depending on model

  • Towing Capacity: Up to 11,000 lbs (~5,000kg)

  • Acceleration: 0–60mph in ~2.7 seconds (Cyberbeast trim)

  • Starting Price (US): $60,990+

🇬🇧 UK Availability: Don’t Hold Your Breath

Tesla has not confirmed a UK release date, and there are several reasons why we might never see the Cybertruck on UK roads in its current form:

  • It’s too wide for UK roads and parking bays

  • Left-hand-drive production only (for now)

  • Tesla has not type-approved the vehicle for UK/EU regulations

  • Reports suggest it may be “unsellable” in the EU without significant redesigns

Verdict: It’s unlikely we’ll see the Cybertruck in the UK before 2026–2027, if at all.

🏞 Rivian R1T: The Adventure Truck We Do Want

Rivian’s R1T is the other electric truck generating buzz — and for good reason. It’s built with premium materials, serious off-road chops, and an eye toward sustainability.

🧾 Key Specs (US Model):

  • Range: 270–400+ miles, depending on battery

  • Towing Capacity: 11,000 lbs

  • Motor Configs: Dual or Quad motor setups

  • Innovative features: Gear tunnel, onboard air compressor, camp kitchen options

🇬🇧 UK Availability: Coming… eventually

Rivian has expressed interest in Europe, and it’s now building a presence in the Netherlands. However, the R1T is currently only available in LHD, and a RHD model hasn’t been officially announced.

Rivian has also announced it will build a factory in the UK (near Bristol), but plans have been delayed due to financial prioritisation in the US market.

Verdict: A UK R1T is possible, but likely no earlier than 2026, depending on RHD development and type approval.

⚠️ Barriers to Electric Pickup Adoption in the UK

Even if these trucks make it across the Atlantic, UK buyers will face challenges:

  • Size: Both models are significantly larger than typical UK pickups (e.g. Ranger, Hilux)

  • Charging infrastructure for commercial use

  • High import prices and luxury car tax thresholds

  • VED exemption ending in April 2025

So What Electric Pickups Are Coming to the UK?

If you’re looking to go electric sooner, here are 3 pickups with a better chance of arriving on UK roads:

1. Ford Ranger PHEV (2025)

  • Plug-in hybrid, not full EV

  • Ideal for fleets and trades who need a 3.5t tow rating

2. Maxus T90EV

  • Already available in the UK

  • Fully electric but only 1t towing and limited off-road capability

3. VW Amarok EV (Expected late 2025–2026)

  • Rumoured development underway

  • Could be based on Ford's EV truck platform

🧠 Final Thoughts: Should You Wait?

If you're dreaming of a Cybertruck or Rivian R1T in the UK, it's worth following the news — but not worth holding off a purchase just yet. The infrastructure, legislation, and vehicle formats just aren’t there — yet.

For now, your best bets are:

  • Plug-in hybrids like the Ford Ranger PHEV

  • Lighter EV pickups like the Maxus T90

  • Waiting for EU/UK-specific launches in 2025–2027
