KGM (Formerly Ssangyong) announce new Musso Pickup Model

by Mark Muschamp 05 Jan 2026 0 Comments

As the UK pickup market braces for a shake-up, the 2026 KGM Musso (formerly the SsangYong Musso) is stepping out of the shadows with a bold new identity. No longer just a value-driven alternative to the Ford Ranger, the next-generation Musso is aiming for the top tier of the segment.

The South Korean Dark Horse

Why the 2026 KGM Musso is a Genuine Ranger Rival

If you still think of KGM as the "budget" choice in the pickup world, it’s time to update your mental showroom. The 2026 KGM Musso has been revealed, and it’s clear that the Korean manufacturer is tired of playing second fiddle to the established giants from Ford and Toyota.

With a striking new design, a dedicated "Musso" sub-brand identity, and the arrival of a pioneering electric variant, the 2026 line-up is KGM’s most ambitious move yet.

A Design That Demands Respect

The first thing you’ll notice is the "face." KGM has ditched the soft, SUV-derived front end for something much more aggressive. The new Musso features a prominent, octagonal grille and a futuristic full-width LED light bar that sits just beneath the bonnet line. It’s boxier, chunkier, and—dare I say—distinctly more American in its stance.

UK buyers will appreciate the rugged touches: chunky wheel arches, heavy side cladding, and vertical LED tail-lights. It looks less like a "car with a bed" and more like a tool designed to tackle a building site or a muddy field in the Peak District.

The Powerhouses: Diesel vs. Electric

KGM is playing a clever game by offering two distinct flavours of power:

  1. The Diesel Workhorse: For those who need to tow 3.5 tonnes without looking at a charging map, the tried-and-tested 2.2-litre turbodiesel remains. Expect around 202bhp and 441Nm of torque (in the long-bed 'XLV' variants). Crucially, KGM has confirmed that diesel power is here to stay for the 2026 model, ensuring it remains a viable tool for the UK's agricultural and construction sectors.

  2. The Musso EV: This is the headline-grabber. The 2026 Musso EV will be one of the UK's first truly capable electric pickups. It features an 80.6kWh 'Blade' battery (LFP) and is expected to offer a range of around 249 miles (WLTP). While its payload is slightly lower than the diesel (around 700-800kg), it offers a refinement level that no diesel-clatter can match.

Specification & Interior: A Premium Shift

Inside, the Musso continues its tradition of having one of the best cabins in the business. The 2026 model steps things up with:

  • Dual 12.3-inch Screens: A digital instrument cluster paired with a high-definition infotainment touchscreen.

  • Luxury Touches: Expect ventilated and heated seats, a 3D 360-degree camera system, and even reclining rear seats—a rarity in the pickup world.

  • Safety Tech: A full suite of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) including Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Payload and Practicality

KGM understands its audience. The Musso will continue to be offered in two lengths. The long-bed (XLV/Saracen+) variant is expected to offer a class-leading payload of up to 1,262kg, comfortably beating the one-tonne threshold required for VAT reclaim—a vital statistic for UK business owners.

UK Launch Date and Pricing

So, when can you get your hands on one?

  • Launch Date: The official UK reveal is expected in early 2026, with the first units likely hitting dealerships by Spring 2026.

  • Pricing: While official UK pricing is under wraps, expect a slight premium over the current model to reflect the upgraded tech. Our estimate puts the entry-level diesel starting at approximately £35,000 (ex. VAT), with the high-spec Saracen and EV models pushing toward the £45,000 - £50,000 mark.

The Journalist’s Verdict

KGM is no longer the "alternative" choice; with the 2026 Musso, they are becoming the "logical" choice. By combining a 3.5-tonne towing capacity with an interior that wouldn't look out of place in a premium SUV, KGM has narrowed the gap to the Ford Ranger to a mere whisker. If the EV variant can deliver on its range promises, 2026 might just be the year the Musso takes the crown.
